comparing driveway surfaces
Surfacing your driveway can be a tricky business. Firstly there are many different surfaces to choose from, secondly the prices of these surfaces vary greatly as does the quality and longevity. It can all be a bit of a nightmare. So here at Oltco we thought we'd give you a run down of some of the options available to you along with some of the pros and cons.
Gravel: This is one of the cheaper ways to surface your driveway however it is probably ne of the most least practical. Gravel is simply dumped, normally in large quantities on your driveway and then raked across the area to create an even finish. However gravel moves it is not fixed in place and therefore bald areas will appear, mounds will be created and bits of gravel will come off the driveway onto surrounding areas. Weeds are no match for gravel and will happily find a home between the loose stones although you may find that they are easier than normal to pick out if you are quick about it.
Block Paving: This can look great when it is installed properly, providing a smooth and hopefully even surface on which you an park your car. Unfortunately the perfection doesn’t last. Over time the colour fades, weeds grow and the rain can erode the surface making it look old and tired. It can also become slippery when wet.
Tarmac: This is aesthetically pleasing when it is first done and installed properly should create a neat smooth surface with no loose stones. However over time tarmac has a tendency to start to break up leaving you with cracks, potholes and weed growth.
Resin Bound Gravel: This surface when fitted correctly looks beautiful and provides you with a smooth, puddle free surface with no loose stones. Resin bound gravel is permeable which prevents standing water and complies with recent SuDS regulations. Minimising weed growth the resin is UV stable which means it remains true even in direct sunlight and it comes with a 20 year guarantee, when fitted by Oltco installers, but will last in excess of 25 years.
