Oltco Resin Bound Driveways

A PLASTIC FREE JULY

Plastic Free July is a global movement that encourages people to stop using single use plastic.

Growing up in Newquay, Cornwall, Tom Stringer and Johnny Pearce, our Co-Directors, became increasingly concerned about the huge amount of waste plastic which was polluting the coastline of Cornwall and beyond and they decided to do something about it.

With our ethos to ‘feel good about the work that we do and the decisions that we make’ we have wanted to help find solutions to tackle the global issue of plastic waste and work alongside other like-minded businesses and organisations to make a real difference.

In 2019, we innovated the world's first sustainable resin solution that uses waste plastic already in circulation, Recycle Bound. In each square metre, the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws are recycled and so far the equivalent of over 200 million plastic straws have been recycled and we are growing that number day by day.

We didn’t just stop there. In 2021, we developed and launched Recycle Base which is a ground reinforcement system made utilising low-grade plastic, including ocean plastic. Low-grade plastic is really difficult to recycle and as a result is often incinerated, releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. Using Recycle Base, an average 70m2 driveway could offset a tonne of CO2 or have the same effect as planting six trees which is amazing.

We also work with our friends at Odyssey Innovation. This organisation was born from a passion to rid the seas of plastic pollution. In 2014, Founder Rob Thompson established a volunteer group of divers to retrieve marine plastic and ghost gear and since then it has achieved so many amazing things. As a part of Odyssey Innovation’s Marine Regeneration Scheme, our HQ, The Feel Good Building is a drop off point for local beach cleans and the plastic collected here forms part of our Recycle Base product.

We also partner with the amazing Exeter City Council to grind the low-grade plastic into tiny pieces at its Materials Reclamation Facility. This is then sent to us so we can use it in our Recycle Base product. To be able to grind this low-grade plastic, Exeter City Council invested in a special piece of machinery to shred it. This purchase was made possible thanks to part-funding from Odyssey Innovation and Plymouth University’s Indigo Project.

We never rest on our laurels and we’re super proud to be working with some incredible organisations. We’ll continue to work to leave a positive impact on our environment.
