What are resin bound surfaces?

Resin bound surfaces bring a new age of quality to outdoor resin flooring solutions. The benefits of resin bound solutions mean they are ideal for a range of outdoor sites, including terraces, driveways, beer gardens, swimming pool surrounds and balconies.

Made from a blend of aggregates coated with a clear UV-stable polyurethane resin the two materials are combined in a force action mix process. The resulting blend is finished to a smooth surface by hand with no loose chippings.

Low Maintenance Surface

As a SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) compliant solution, resin bound surfaces do not require additional planning permission. The porous properties of resin bound solutions stop the build up of water on the floor surface and therefore minimises puddles. Resin bound solutions are naturally slip resistant and additional anti-slip technology can be included in the blend through the use of Aluminium Oxide if required.

In addition resin bound solutions require minimal maintenance. Weed growth is reduced, whilst the surface is very easy to clean using water and a stiff brush.

The main difference between resin bound and resin bonded surfaces is the application which provides a different finish.

Resin bonded surfaces are installed by spreading resin across the area and loose stones are scattered over the top and left to set. Creating the effect of loose gravel without migrating stone. Unlike resin bound surfacing resin bonded requires additional drainage as it is not permeable.

Resin bound surfacing is created by mixing resin with the aggregate prior to application, we then hand trowel this onto the base achieving a smooth look. It is permeable and has excellent drainage so no additional drainage is required and you’ll never need to worry about gravel coming loose over time.

Professionally installed, properly maintained resin bound surfaces can last for 25 years or more. They’re very resilient and are relatively low maintenance, when compared with alternatives such as concrete or loose gravel. Your resin bound area will look great without needing to weed or rake stray gravel and stones.  At Oltco, we offer guarantees of up to 20 years on our resin bound surfaces, so you can be confident it’ll look great for years to come.

Resin often works out cheaper than block paving, especially in the long term. This is due to how low maintenance resin surfacing can be, simply needing a sweep with a stiff outdoor brush. In comparison block paving needs to be regularly weeded and jet washed to keep it looking its best whilst remaining safe and non-slip.

The price of block paving varies dramatically depending on the material, size, colour and style that you choose. Whereas resin has much more consistency in pricing, see Oltco’s starting prices below:

20m2 driveway: £70 - £100 per square metre.
50m2 driveway: £80 – £95 per square metre.
100m2 driveway: £70 - £90 per square metre.

Resin can greatly minimise weeds appearing in your driveway. Unlike concrete or block paving, there are no cracks and gaps in resin bound flooring, so you won’t need to worry about unwanted weeds popping up through them. However, seedling can occur when seeds are dispersed by the weather or animals. If you do spot any seedlings sprouting from you resin bound surface, simply remove them by hand ensuring to remove the root as well as the weed.

Regularly sweeping your resin surface with a firm outdoor brush should prevent seedlings from sprouting.

A resin bound surface provides a low maintenance solution for homeowners. No heavy maintenance is required but you will need to regularly clean the area to prevent any issues that could lead to repairs being required.

Regularly sweeping your resin surface with a stiff outdoor brush will be enough to remove any unwanted debris and prevent moss growth. If you notice any hard to remove dirt or stains on your driveway it can easily be removed with jet washing.

You need to be cautious with jet washing resin as being too rough could lead to damage compromising the integrity of the resin. We recommend only using a jet wash system with a maximum pressure of less than 150bar.

Sweep the area thoroughly before jet washing to remove loose debris.
The water temperature should be mild. (Water that is too hot or too cold could damage the resin surface.)
Hold the nozzle of the jet wash at least 20cm away from the floor when spraying.
Spray your surface in sweeping motion to avoid prolonged pressure in one area.

If you’re planning to use a detergent on your resin bound flooring, you must ensure it’s suitable for resin surfaces and always test on a small inconspicuous area.
